I combine the techniques of Reiki and Shiatsu. Both are Japanese healing therapies based on the notion of Ki. The term ‘Ki’ is equivalent to the Chinese concept of ‘Qi’ (Chi), which can be translated as universal energy or life force. It forms the basis of traditional oriental energy practices such as Qigong, Tai Chi, acupuncture and acupressure.
Reiki is practiced by the placing of hands on or just above a client’s body. It is based on the idea that 'when our energy is low, we are more susceptible to stress, fatigue, and illness. But when our energy is balanced and flowing freely, we feel vibrant, joyful and at ease' (Australian Reiki Connection).
Shiatsu can be described as a form of acupressure that involves ‘applying pressure to the body using a practitioner’s thumbs, palms, elbows, knees and feet’ (Shiatsu Therapy Association of Australia). The practitioner works along the meridians (energy channels) to release and nurture the flow of Ki.
For both practices, clients are fully clothed and can be seated, standing, laying on a massage table or on a futon on the floor. Reiki can be practiced remotely and is a good option for clients who cannot attend in-person appointments.
Treatments can help with stress, insomnia, low mood, fatigue, digestive problems, body pain, headaches, and recovery from illness or injury.
